Major Meteor Event in Russia

Apparently completely unrelated to the coming asteroid DA14, this Meteor crash in Russia this morning may have injured as many as 400 people. io9 has a good summary of the story, here.

What's amazing is those cars just kept driving forward. I would've stopped!

Pretty freaky. Don't ask me whether I believe what they're saying.

Whoa. The video above makes it look cool but harmless, and I thought people must've got injured while driving.

Then I went to io9 and heard and saw the damage from the blast and... holy crap. That's some serious detonation.

It's amazing that humans have lived here as long as we have without any killer hits, and then by the time we do get one, it should be at a time when we have the technology to do something about it. Hopefully, at least!

Interesting. On the evening of the 12th I saw something spectacular over the Caribbean. It was the largest 'shooting star' I've ever seen. Not as big as this, but really big. It came right down over the ocean and it actually looked like it was going to go right into the water, but flashed out before it hit. Of course, when you're looking over the ocean distances are hard to gauge, so it may still have been several miles up, but it was amazing.

Incredible stuff. I'm glad we're no longer in the midst of the Cold War, those folks must have thought they were being bombed.

Wow. The sonic boom and the blasts knocking in the doors were crazy. Sad that people got hurt though.

Wow! and it actually could be a small piece of DA14. It's hard to meteorites that small...

It's been reported there are at least 1,000 injured people, thought they say the injuries aren't serious, mostly. I have to wonder how many of the injuries are due to car accidents. Imagine the blinding brightness!

It's is tre coincidental that this meteor hit the same day an asteroid is passing near Earth, and apparently the two aren't related at all. Watch the skies for fiction fodder, guys.

People just drive around with their cameras running?

That is AWEESOOME. Didja see how the shadows grew just because of the sheer brightness of the meteor? That's a once in a lifetime opportunity. I would have loved to see that </3

You're starting your day, minding your business, thinking of everything you've got to do and--a meteor explodes overhead? No one saw that coming.

You can really see why people thought it was a UFO.

When is our space program going to include a viable way for humanity to survive the big hit? Oh right, we canceled that. /endsoapbox
