A to Z Challenge: J - Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition

Man. I'm tired this morning, but I still had to come to work, so let's just get right down to business.

jux·ta·po·si·tion
[juhk-stuh-puh-zish-uhn] n. an act or instance of placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast

Synonyms: collocation, apposition

Etymology: 1660s, from Fr. juxtaposition (1660s), from L. iuxta "beside, near" + Fr. position (see position (n.)). Latin iuxta is a contraction of *iugista (adv.), superlative of adjective *iugos "closely connected," from stem of iugum "yoke," from iungere "to join" (see jugular).

Awesome photo. And never heard of collocation, which sounds like a good word to know.

Another one of my favorites. This word is so cool to say. Try it. Say it over and over in your head about ten times. See?

I feel your pain. Tired today too.

I have heard this word for years but until the last few days and A-Z, I never knew what it meant. It's one of my new favourite words.

Juxtaposition=great to use with character development. Your character is brilliant, which is cool, but even cooler, showing a moment of incredibly stupid adds a nice touch to internal/external conflict.

Love the shot, Matt. Before and after? Well, at least that's what it says to me. From horror to healing.

Get some rest.:-)

This is one of those words that I love to hate. I always think it sounds kinda pretentious but it is also such a great descriptive word. Great pic.

Great photograph. Also, this is the title of an excellent book penned by Piers Anthony (I would consider it middle grade or perhaps young adult) but I remember it clearly even though decades have passed.

That's a really cool picture, and interesting depiction of the term.

Great choice!

Done right, this is such an awesome technique to use in writing. Margie Lawson talked about this technique a bit in one of her lecture packets I bought, and I want to hone my abilities in using it so I can power up my writing with it. :)

I'm a little shocked that this is the second Juxtaposition post of the day. It's like the wife and I. Opposites.

Wow. The juxtaposition of those two images really gives a person pause. A great reminder of what's at risk.

Oh wow--is that a mushroom cloud juxtaposed with tree foliage! Very creepily cool. And one being B&W and one being color makes the image even more powerful.

I learned that word in middle school, the same day as onomatopoeia, and now, for some reason, I can't think of one without thinking of the other, yet they have NOTHING to do with one another.

That's one of my favorite words. You can blame that on Mr. Anthony (that Michael mentioned).

A feast of descriptive words! (no, I didn't know the word 'collocation' either!) Mind you, I can't think away I could weave it into a natural conversation.... ;-) Still, it's nice to be informed - will file it away for future reference!

BTW - thanks for stopping by my blog earlier! I hope you enjoy the rest of the A-Z challenge!

SueH I refuse to go quietly!

Great word. Important element in our manuscripts.

I can never forget this word. When I was in AP English our teacher used this word, then she showed us a sample essay with the word, and then it creeped into our own essays. Some of my classmates used it wrong.

What a cool word! It is one of those words that get tossed around in art school during art history lessons when you are looking at paintings and photo images.

Good job!
Best wishes,
