A to Z Challenge: F - Fetor

Fetor

Finally! A word I've actually used in my own writing. Sure, I've only done it once, but it still counts. Let's get right down to business.

fe·tor also foe·tor [fē-tər] n. an offensive stale or putrid odour; stench

Synonyms: malodor, malodour, reek, stench, stink, mephitis

Etymology: “offensive smell,” mid-15c., from L. fetor, foetor, from fetere (see fetid).

This one ended up so short! Oh well, it's Friday. Have a great weekend, everybody.

The nearest I've ever come to this one is fetid :-)

Think I'll name a character Fetor.

Good Grief! It sounds like the smell it describes! I love words like that.

Love it. If it was an offensive smell that came from space, would it be a Feteor?

Why does every word that has to do with something smell so funny sounding? I haven't used this one before, but now I just might!

Happy Friday!

Great new word. When I'm told the letter is 'F' I initially had thoughts of naughty words.

I've seen fetid, but don't recall fetor. Well done, sir.

Can we see the example?

I was gonna say it sounded like fetid, but you got that (see fetid) so I don't have anything more to say. :)

Ooohhh fancy. I imagine Fetor as a bald man in his 60s who likes to chomp on cigars.

Never used Fetor before in a sentence. Wait, I suppose I did in my previous sentence. Fetid, I've used tons of times. So, I'm really close on this one.

And any parent out there will automatically link this word to a baby's diaper once they switch to solid foods.

I just gagged thinking about that.

Karen Baldwin said...

I see now, fetor is the root stink word of fetid...which I have used.

I love this theme idea (so many great words to include, how do you chose?!)...though today's post is a bit stinky, tee hee hee. Good luck with the Challenge.

Great word! i'm a fan of using (or trying to use) the sense of smell in my writing, so there's a bunch of "reek" and "stench" in there, and this is a welcome addition to the arsenal :) Thanks!

This sounds like the kind of word one uses when describing the strongholds of evil people in fantasy fiction. Bubbling fetor...gross undead...that kind of thing.

aka, the leftover refrigerator experiment--or just plain forgotten. My son's shoes-fetor.

I have a dog that should be renamed and called Fetor, trust me, after 5 minutes in his presences, you'd agree.

Have a great weekend, Matt!
