Holiday Woes

I had a wonderful Christmas with my family, and there are many things I could tell you about, and celebrate, but instead I'm going to bitch about a couple things, because I can.

My Kindle died over the weekend. I've owned it for about 9 months. I'm really pissed. I'd grown quite attached to it, I must say, in those few short months.

I was in the middle of reading a really good book, too. Not one I can talk about, though. Thankfully I have the Kindle app on my iPad, so all was not lost, but reading on the iPad is a little bit like spraying lemon juice into your eyes, at least by comparison.

There is nothing quite as cool as e-ink. Except when that shit dies. I have no idea what went wrong with it. On Christmas Eve, it just froze. It would not respond to any buttons. I gave it a hard reset by holding the sleep slider button over to the right for over 20 seconds, and that rebooted the device, which then worked for about five minutes, and froze up again. I was able to reset it 3 or 4 times on Christmas Eve, but by the time we got home from Grandma's house, it was completely screwed. Now it will not respond to any buttons, and will only light up when connected to the charger, but will not be recognized by the PC, or complete charging (where the indicator turns from yellow to green). Amazon better have some kind of warranty in place, because I've had it for less than a year, and just got a second and third Kindle (different models) for my kids.

I'll be contacting them today.

The other thing I need to bitch about is the NFL. Well, mainly, Adrian Petersen. Every game I watched over the weekend sucked., but especially the Vikings. Not only did they win a pointless game, and therefore needlessly remove themselves from the running for the first draft pick, but they lost Adrian Petersen, possibly the best player in the sport, for this season, and most likely some of next season. It seems so utterly pointless.

I'm not saying he shouldn't have been playing. He's a competitor, and that's what they do, but for him to tear his ACL and MCL in such a needless game, and then for the Vikings to go on and somehow win that game ... it just puts a really crappy cap on a truly terrible season.

All right, that's it. I'm done complaining. I really did have a wonderful holiday, otherwise. How was your Christmas?

Sorry about your Kindle. Although I prefer the reader on the iPad to anything else.
Saw that Petersen was out for the year. That does suck.
Drew Brees broke Dan Marino's record - that was something!

So, you're saying I should be GLAD the Rams continue to lose? I hate seeing them play sh*tty!

Sorry about your Kindle. Guess that's another reason I'm glad I still have the paper varieties in my house.

I hate hearing things about Kindles not working.... (looking at my own suspiciously).
Hopefully you won't have any trouble with customer service.

Print things rule! LOL!

But seriously - I've found Amazon customer services to be really nice (well here in the UK) so I hope you get your Kindle all sorted!

Yeah! What about this NFL stuff going on eh!??! LOL! Sorry, can't BS a thing regards American Football - 'cept that why on earth does sport happen over the holidays?!?! Especially when I've over-indulged and gained at least another Old Kitty! LOL! Take care

Sorry to hear about the Kindle. I hope you can get it sorted. Why do such things always pick the most inconvenient times to die?

Huntress said...

My Kindle froze in exactly the same way but the Amazon site has the fix.

Sorry, I don't remember how I beat my Kindle into submission but it IS fixable.

some kind of download maybe? Update? anyway, best of luck.

great christmas, btw. I discovered homemade eggnog and rum.

I got a bookmark for my niece that said, "Real books don't get viruses." Sorry about your kindle though. Guess it's why I still love paperbacks the best....they never freeze up.

My hubcap loves football but I get tired of the dancing and the grandstanding and thumping of chests and now this dunking the ball through the goal posts. What, Dude! You didn't save the world, you just scored a touchdown for which you're paid millions to do. Oh well....it's almost over along with Christmas and soon New Years and the lonely winter begins. Nothing to do then but write....

Oh no! Now you've got me all terrified about my kindle. You don't just lose all your books when that happens, do you?

You should have no problem with getting your kindle replaced, though. The implied warranty of merchantability should protect you. I mean, nine months is a REALLY short time for a device like this to last.

That bites about your Kindle. Lay into Amazon and I hope they replace it immediately.

I know that really stinks about Peterson. This NFL season has really been a trial. My poor Bears. :( But Marino's record finally fell. Yay! Now if someone would just step up and shut up the 72 Dolphins...

Sarah Ahiers said...

well, on the radio this morning they said there should be no real issue with Peterson being ready to play at the start of next season, so you should be good there.

I would really love to know what amazon says, though. I'll be getting a kindle for my b-day in just a little over a month, so if they say something like "sorry, no warranty. Sometimes they just break" LET ME KNOW.
Because then maybe i'll take a closer look at the nook.

First, glad to see you back on the air, and in classic style, no less.

And second, Amazon should be more than willing to help anyone who writes on their blog that "reading on the iPad is a little bit like spraying lemon juice into your eyes."

I'm sorry about your Kindle! I hope things go smoothly when you call Amazon.

I saw on RedZone when AP got hurt. You could tell immediately that it was bad. It sucks he got hurt though.

The Eagles are out of it. I never had bought into the dream team hype - was too worried that with a shortened offseason and not enough practice that they brought in too many new players. Hopefully they'll do better next year.

And watching Brees break the record last night was sweet.

That SUCKS about your Kindle! You were smart to have a backup plan. It sounds like the power supply went out. Surely it can't be too much to repair??

I hope you get your Kindle up and running again. Technology is great until it decides to act up. Good luck!

My computer virus was back with a vengeance last week but I think *prays* it's fixed and solved. On the downside though, my little one came down with a raging stomach virus on Christmas morning. She still hasn't played with her presents because she feels so blah.

ohman! let us know if you can get your kindle fixed. i just got one for christmas and i'm still trying to figure out how to get it to work. *techfail*
my hubs was upset about the bears losing, but you'd think he'd be used to that by now. :P
that is such a shame for that player to be injured so severely like that. no matter which game it was that hurt him. but the insignificance of that game sure is like a slap in the face to him and his fans, i'm sure.
sorry about that suckitude.
but i'm glad everything else was shiny!

Josin L. McQuein said...

Ack! Sounds like you got one with a faulty battery. I don't know the specifics, but you'd think anything under a year old would have a warranty. Hopefully you can get it sorted quickly, because you're right about the e-ink. It's far superior to reading on a backlit screen. (I hope they develop a color version)

Marta Szemik said...

Oh no! I'm sorry about your kindle. I'd be interested to hear Amazon's reply to the issue.
My Christmas was good. Still reaping in my vacation mode in sunny Florida :) And, most of all I'm happy to have an internet connection (although I must say I've been good about staying off line)

Sorry about your Kindle, Matt. But it does sound like you had a GREAT Christmas otherwise. Fantasticaliscious!

Amazon is super when it comes to customer service. Mine quit on me after about six months of owning it, and they replaced it, no questions asked. (Other than if I had tried the holding the slide button trick)

Here's hoping 2012 brings you and yours new journeys and new treasures!

And a new Kindle......

All I've heard is people having excellent results with Amazon customer service in replacing Kindles. Let us know how it turns out for you.

The injury situation in the NFL is horrible. But what do you do? That's why players hold out for the largest paycheck they can get, because their career could be over at any moment.

I hadn't heard about Peterson - my nephew will be crushed!!

Good luck with the Kindle warranty - I hope it gets fixed/replaced. I love mine too :)

Sorry to hear about your Kindle. I hope they can fix it for you.

Can't say that I'm sorry about Peterson though, I'm a Packer fan. Hope this doesn't affect our "friendship". :) Have a great week.

Conversely, the Lions won (I was born and raised in Lansing, MI) so I had that feel-good feely kind of feel all weekend. I was actually pulling for the Vikes to lose and end up with the number one pick and select Luck. Make the NFC a strong division top to bottom.

And Santa brought us an iPad and a Kindle Fire, so can;t complain about that. Hope you find resolution to your Kindle soon!

I hope your Kindle gets fixed or replaced soon! Once you get used to one, it's hard to do without it.

That totally bites and make me not want to buy a kindle. If we're in the complaining mood, I was totally sick on Christmas so I ended spending the day in bed while my husband play referee with the kids. Not exactly the holiday cheer I wanted...

Wine and Words said...

My holiday was on par with the Vikings I'd wager. Christmas died along with your Kindle. But there's always next year. Happy Holidays Matt.

Kristen Pelfrey said...

I am sorry that your e-reader went belly up. But it sounds like you critically thought your way through the problem. Yay critical thinking.
I am glad the Packers won.
I hope your day goes well.
Be splendid.

Dude. Sorry about your woes! :) I love reading on my ipad...what the heck's wrong with you? And why can't you say what you were reading? And how far away does grandma live? Okay. Outta here.

Bryan Russell said...

I can't believe he blew his knee. He was about the only bright spot for the Vikings this year.

I've had my Sony e-reader for a couple of years. It froze up twice, but that was when the battery was low. About a month ago the screen went black and I still had new books that hadn't been read! I went online and found that I should use a needle or pin to hit the reset button. It worked! Hope it sticks and I hope your Kindle gets figured out too!

Christine Rains said...

Sorry to hear about your Kindle, but glad you had a great holiday otherwise. Mine was nice and quiet. We're finally getting some snow today.

Jeff Beesler said...

I finished the latest run-through of the manuscript that I've been working on, on Christmas Eve no less! Ha! So right now it's in the hands of the final beta reader, and then, my friend. It's off to submission land with it.

Which reminds me, I ought to start working on a query letter than I can share with you and your readers here on your blog...

Sorry about your Kindle. I hope you can fix it. 9 months isn't very old, so it's particularly bad that it's gone wrong so soon.

As for Christmas, I wasn't too well. I'm blaming it on the Chinese I had the night before... not that it'll put me off Chinese, of course ;)

Sorry to hear about your Kindle, Matt. I hope it's an easy fix. I have a Nook color and really like it, but my daughter has a Kindle and prefers not having it backlit.

That sucks about your kindle. :(

I have always found Amazon Kindle support to be super-nice and super-friendly. Hopefully you'll get yours fixed or replaced soon.

In the meantime, are your kids' accounts linked to your own?

Commandeer ... er ... borrow one of theirs and download your book onto it. My daughter and I can share all titles on our Kindles.

I've only used the kindle app for PC but I've lost a device that I'd grown attached to, so I'm feeling your loss.

As for Adrian Peterson, I was informed of his injury today. One of my co workers was hot around the collar that he'd been playing in the first place. All I could do was shake my head. I hope he can bome back with a bionic body part replacemnt geared to go for next season.

Mike Winchell said...

Sorry about the Kindle. You've got me worried about mine now. Hope you get things squared away with them and get a new one.

And I'm a St. Louis Rams fan, and just about everything related to them sucks, so maybe that'll make you feel better. I mean, you could be a Rams fan, right?

Angela McCallister said...

You've probably called Amazon already, but their customer service is fantastic. My screen broke about six months into my ownership and they replaced it free, no q's asked. Received it in only a few days. Unfortunately, the replacement broke about a month later. Still gotta find out if I can get it replaced :( New screen (~$100) costs more than replacing the Kindle. And btw, the two biggest technical probs w/ Kindle are broken screens and freezing up. Hard reset usually works, but not always. Amazon talks you through the troubleshooting.

And yes, you keep your books. They're all saved in the Cloud and you just download them to your new Kindle or to your Cloud Reader.

I did cry the second time my Kindle broke. Guess my heart broke with it, lol.

I got a bunch of great Doctor Who swag. And a whole lot of stress being around non-blood-related family.

Sorry about the Kindle. That really blows.

oh, man. I'm so sorry your Kindle died. I truly love mine. You're so right about e-ink. What is it that makes it so gorgeous???

But I'm pissed you have an iPad. I do not. :p (that's me sticking my tongue out at you.)

After that, you started writing a buncha mrrr... mrrr... mrrr... ;p <3
