Critique Group

I'm not going to do much of a post today because I have revisions and critiques to work on and I'm still trying to cut back on my blogging schedule. I did promise on Friday though that I would talk about my critique group so I will do something brief here just to introduce them. Most of you probably know some of these men but you also probably know less of them half as well as you'd like to ... anyway.

It was my idea to start a crit group of men only, who were my age or near, and who all write (obviously) and blog. Please understand I LOVE LOVE LOVE my women writer/blogger friends and I have been critiqued by them before as well and I may one day join another crit group (if any of them will have me) but as this is my first time participating in one of these things and I am rather shy I thought having partners like me might soften the blow. Oh well judge me if you have to ...

We need to come up with a cool name for ourselves. I was thinking something like The League of Ordinarily Surly Men or something stupid like that. Anyway let me introduce you to the members (please visit their blogs and become followers if you don't already know them):

Roland Yeomans.

Ted Cross.

Ben Hutchins.

Simon Larter.

Me.

Simon is actually currently a Silent Partner because he did not have a novel ready for critique but he has said he wants to take part in the near future so I am doing my best to drive some piddly amount of traffic to his blog as well.

So that's it. See you all tomorrow.

Aw, thanks Matt! I need all the help I can get, as it is frustrating typing out so many blog posts for so few readers! Anyhow, our first month was pretty good in my view. I haven't made any big changes, but I have certainly corrected a few things in my novel.

What a cool sounding group (and name). I follow Roland and Simon and know they'll be awesome critting buddies. Good idea to have the male species make up your ranks since I'm guessing none of you are writing from a female pov. :)

Stina, in the prequel I am writing now my MC is a woman!

I admit it...I'm a shameless read-aheader.

I saw the list of men and I was thinking, "Hey! That's all men" and since men are in short supply on the blogosphere, I smelled a rat.

Of course at that point, I didn't know what you were listing (read ahead, remember?) so I had to go back and READ to see if I should be offended or not. hahaha. I'm not.

Enjoy your crit group!

That's so cute! Only men! It makes sense unless you need a female perspective. Cool.

Awesome! Yes, we're five in my critics group- Four girls and one guy but we all write different genres. We send our stuff out by email but have a private forum group room on our writers social network site that allows us to all post our critiques in the same place and bounch ideas off of one another. So far its worked out great! Enjoy the testosterone!

Sounds like a good plan in the works. I've considered a group like this. Perhaps when I get closer to finishing the novel I am working on I will start looking for a group to be a part of or get one together. Good for you guys for taking the initiaive.

Editing the post now Ben, thanks for the update.

Not sure how I missed it but when I Googled Ben Hutchins blogspot it didn't come up. I must have spelled your name wrong.

Matt, so funny. Enjoy all that testosterone. I agree that waves of estrogen can be a bit overwhelming at times. Even I, as a woman need a break. :)

Thanks for the linky, good sir! I'm a silent partner at the moment, but I do plan on weighing in with critiques regularly. And once progress begins again on my novel, I'll be happy to share with you gents.

Cheers!

back when my group had even numbers, we were 50% men.
Now we're 2/3 women.

Sounds like an awesome group!

I think the most important decision to be made is the uniform.

Matthew Rush said...

That's a damn good point Jon. I'm thinking pink and green unitards which are also known as wrestling singlets.

Thanks Bryan.

Hey Matt, your post pushed me to 50 followers! Thanks!

The eventual diversification of your critique group will bring added value to the critiques. Congrats on pulling together a group of writers who are interested in improving their craft!
