Ten Places to See Before I ...

Josin's comment on yesterday's post about the photo of Nathan got me thinking. In it he is standing in the foreground with beautiful Machu Picchu in the background. That is absolutely one of the places I want to see before I ... evolve into pure energy, or get bitten by flesh eating zombies.

Hey! It could happen.

So in light of yesterday's heavy post, today's is going to be something a little more fun, with photos! And maybe a double rainbow for good measure. Okay, maybe not. So without further ado here are ten places I would really love to visit, in no particular order (excpet for Machu Picchu being first, because it sort of brought this whole thing up):

P.S. I'm going to be stealing summaries of these places from Wikipedia because I don't have time to write my own, and just in case one of you hasn't heard of one of these places. I'll link to the article for credit and so you can read more if you like.

Machu Picchu (Quechua: Machu Pikchu) – "Old Mountain", pronounced [ˈmɑtʃu ˈpixtʃu]) – is a pre-Columbian 15th-century Inca site located 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) above sea level.[1][2] It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas", it is perhaps the most familiar icon of the Inca World.

Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត) is a temple complex at Angkor, Cambodia, built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation — first Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist. It is the world's largest religious building.[1] The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.

Wudang Mountain
The Wudang Mountains (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: Wǔdāng Shān), also known as Wu Tang Shan or simply Wudang, are a small mountain range in the northwestern part of Hubei Province of People's Republic of China, just to the south of the city of Shiyan.

In years past, the mountains of Wudang were known for the many Taoist monasteries to be found there, monasteries which became known as an academic centre for the research, teaching and practice of meditation, Chinese martial arts, traditional Chinese medicine, Taoist agriculture practices and related arts.

The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders) is a waterfall located in southern Africa on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The falls are some of the largest in the world.

Mesa Verde National Park is a U.S. National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. It was created in 1906 to protect some of the best preserved cliff dwellings in the world. The park occupies 81.4 square miles (211 km2) (211 square kilometers) near the Four Corners and features numerous ruins of homes and villages built by the Ancestral Puebloan people, sometimes called the Anasazi.

Okay. Dude, I'm cutting this to five. This is taking way too long. Maybe I'll do five more tomorrow. Any places you'd like to see?

Ooohhhh beautiful! Personally I'd love to see Oregon. I know, it's not exotic, but I hear it lovely.

Wow! Those places look amazing! You should add Meteora in Greece to your list. It seems you'll love it. I'll send you a photo!

Tracy said...

What, no Disney World?? You have no idea what you're missing!

All kidding aside, Victoria Falls looks absolutely amazing. I've also always wanted to tour Ireland. Not one specific part, ALL of it.

Oh, and in response to your comment yesterday. I would totally link up my blog to my email if I had any clue how to do that. I assure you anything technical I do, it's by mistake.

I'm just going to use your Top 10 List.:) We're actually taking the kids to Mesa Verde this summer as my 3-yo will finally be able to climb everything (and we only live a few hours away). We really want to go to Machu Picchu when they're a little older, and Angkor Wat looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing these gorgeous pictures. :)

I've been to Mesa Verde! When I lived in Colorado. My rec: don't take a 12 month old, it's just not as much fun that way. Although the babies do like to watch the native dances. :)

The rest look mighty awesome!

wow, really beautiful places! I think mine would be the green cliffs of ireland, hawaii, London, Quebec, New Orleans, California, and Colorado...
BTW- I feel like Nathan Bransford leaving agenting is kind of like the pope deciding to take another job offer. So much of what NB has put out there has been gospel to me, I don't know how to feel about him leaving the field:(

I agree with Angkor Wat certainly. E've seen Montezuma's Castle a few times, so I don't feel a strong need to see the Colorado ruins. Same thing with the Chinese site -- I saw enough like it already, though of course in an ideal world I would love to see all of these places. I would suggest checking out Prague, Dubrovnik, Reykjavik at New Years, Bangkok and the beaches at Phuket. I've been all over and these are my favorites. London is perhaps my true favorite, but it seems to obvious for your list.

Ooh gorgeous places you picked there. I'd like to see a few of those places as well. But I'd love to go back to Venice. I spent a few days there and loved it. Plus it's the land of ice-cream and pizza! hee hee

Cappadocia, Turkey is #2 on my list, Machu Picchu is #1. I figure I'll have to see most of it after I die;)

i'm not a big traveller, so it's never occured to me to make a list like this.
But after seeing yours, i think i need to make one

Angkor Wat is definitely on my list as is The Great Wall and St. Basil's. I'd love to see Petra and Stonehenge, too. Giza is a must for virtue of being the only remaining original "Wonder" left.

The idea that ancients were able to build (or in the case of Petra carve) things of that magnitude - that have survived mostly in tact - awes me.

Notre Dame because it's an architectural marvel. Westminster Abbey because you literally have history under your feet.

Other things aren't quite so well known, like the (now public) house in England that "supposedly" belonged to one of my ancestors.

Those pictures take my breath away every time I see them. I would KILL to go to those places and just...sit...and enjoy them. So beautiful

These are some of the most beautiful places on earth. I'm adding them to my long, long list of places I want to visit. Right now top on my list, New Zealand!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

I've seen Mesa Verde - it's cool.
I still want to see New Zealand. And I wanted to before LOTR, but that really fueled the fire.

Nice list! I've actually been to Mesa Verde and it is awesome! I must go back soon. It's not too far away from me. Good thing, because I hardly ever travel.

Ooo...awesome choices--and all places I've never been. Prague is on my list. The REAL Greek Isles (all I saw was Corfu, and that doesn't count). Spain (anywhere in Spain, I've heard great things about all the cities). Sydney. Yep, so many places to see, so little time or money. Le Sigh...

(also I love that you didn't just go back to the beginning of your post and call it "5 places to see..." That's what I would've done--but I cheat like that) :)

Nate Wilson said...

Great start to the list, Matt. Other than the Picchu, I'm hoping to visit Thailand, Ireland, Australia, the Galapagos, Prague, and the NY Times Best Sellers List.

Spectacular list! And of course you'll be sharing photos of you in these places when you're rich and famous and...well not on Oprah, I guess. (You could take us with you and skip that step, if you'd prefer.:D)

I've been dying to get to Macchu Picchu. Did you know you have to eat this special leaves on the way up to keep the altitude from messing with you? I have friends who've been.
Angkor Wat would be great too. Heck, I'd go anywhere. If I only had the time/money.

I'd love to visit various museums all over Europe. The Great Wall and the Pyramids too. The Parthenon. I like the historical stuff.

Neat list. I'd have to think about mine--Machu Picchu would be on it as well.

Victoria falls... I just stared at that picture for twelve minutes, imagining standing there. reveling in the beauty and magnificence.

I need to go there.

Great choices. I'd love to take my daughter back to China (she's adopted)to see the orphanage and city where she's from.

Wonderful choices. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Mesa Verde and it is awesome.

Machu Picchu is one of those places that, no matter how great it looks in pictures, the pictures just doesn't even do it justice. It is so unbelievably incredible. If you ever have the chance to go I can't recommend it enough.

Great to see all the Angkor Wat love here. I'd never heard of it till I saw a documentary with Graham Hancock explaining the precision and meaning of all that sacred geometry.

And never heard of those Chinese mountains, but now I want to go.
