The Trouble with Vacation
I just had nine days off in a row. And the best part? I only had to use 3 vacation days to make it happen. It was a blissful break, and one much needed and well earned. I ate a lot of great food, rested hard, rocked the family time, and got a decent amount of writing done.
The problem is that this morning I arrived at the office to find 1500 emails waiting for me (that is not an exaggeration). Funny thing is, I'm actually glad to get back into the swing of things.
Happy Monday, QQQEers.

I can see a lot of deleting in your future...
Glad you had a great break.
The possibility of successfully navigating 1500 e-mails must feel approximately 3,720 to 1.
I'm glad to hear you had a nice break. It's nice to take some time. I didn't get much writing done, but I did get family time in. It's nice to be back on a schedule though.
Declare email bankruptcy. Just delete them all. I actually read an essay by a productivity writer who basically said deleting your emails when they get overwhelming is valid because if it's important, the person will write you another one.
But I'm with you. Vacations are great, but they're so difficult to get back into the swing of things. Good luck!
And most of it will be spam.
This why my hubby takes his blackberry on vacation. He can delete the emails unread when he gets them, instead of deleting 1500 emails unread when he returns. :D
1500??? Holy shit! good luck getting through those ...
I know that feeling too well. My deputy is in the process of moving and will be gone for 3 weeks by the time she returns. I already feel her pain in the email department.
1500 emails, Holy Carp! You are either one popular dude, or very good at what you do.
Although I read this post, after seeing the title I really didn't need to. I already knew what you were going to say. My husband took last week off, which means my writing time gets axed for the week. Now, with the house quiet and the kiddos off to school, I'm finding it so hard to tackle all my catching up.
Best of luck with your mountain, Matt.
The cold reality of going back to work is coming in a few minutes for me too. I checked e-mail at home, and luckily, did not have nearly as much as you. But I have lots of things with deadlines to attend to.
1500 (O_O) whoa. This is where reading on a diagonal comes in handy.
Last Thanksgiving when we were in Arkansas, I didn't even check my email, and I came home to about that many.
This is my final day of Thanksgiving vacation, and although I planned to use it for writing, I am currently stuck.
STUCK. STUCK. STUCK.
The thing is, once I get back to work, I will probably get un-stuck. I need to be busy doing something else for the ideas to really flow.
Which gives me pause for thought when I fantasize about quitting the day job and writing full time. Even if I could afford to do it, should I?
I'm staring at my own work laptop right now...and I only had the standard two days off.
Hope you get your head above water, man!
1500?!?!?!??!?! Wha.....?!?!?!
*falls backwards in disbelief*.
Take care
x
I remember the days when my job still gave vacations. They were great, but I never figured out how work could back up that would take a month to get through it all. WOW on the 1500 emails!
I swear I only clicked on sent once! Those other 1,499 emails were just me making sure the email went through!
Haha that is hilarious :) That is truly the worst part of vacation -- I just came back from the Smokies.
Whoa! Good luck with that. When you're the host & chief cook & bottle-washer (that would be me), these types of holidays are anything BUT refreshing. Now I need a vacation.
whoa! I think if I saw that many emails waiting for me, I'd run screaming from the building! :D
Awesome that you had such a lovely vacay, though! Ahh, holidays~ <3
I wish I felt energized, it just makes me feel tired!
At least you did get some writing done. I've had several long weekends recently due to local holidays, and I managed to not get any writing done at all.
Recharged and ready to go? Try to make that feeling last. Work has a way of flattening our exuberance.
That cartoon made me laugh. Glad you had a good vacation.
I hope for your sake most of that is spam so you can just go "delete, delete, delete." Have fun. :)
Um... are you going to make wallpaper out of them?
Wow. That's a lot of email demanding your attention. You are one popular dude.
1500?!? OH. MY. I'm not envious of that at all. Good look, Matt.
i'm so totally checked out. I don't want to do anything. I think Thanksgiving ruined me. Sigh
ACK! I hate that! In fact I hate it bad enough that I often log on from home and go through some of my email so I don't have that ugly in-box when I get back. I don't do the WORK part, but I weed the junk.
Sounds like my yahoo junk mail account :D
Glad you had a great break! I did too, but now I'm biding my time until Christmas!
love those long breaks. I get my corporate e-mail on my phone...I don't have to read it, but I can't seem to stay away.
Glad you enjoyed your break! And don't drown, okay? :)
Yow! That's a lot of emails to catch up on...but good to get a break from it all.
I had a great five day break with my family!
I know exactly how you feel. Loved the time off but sort of happy to be back at work. Hate the work pile tho'.
Oh well, another week off at Christmas. Whew hoo!
Oh goodness... you and Alex need to start your own "I can't keep up with my inbox" support group...
I got nothing done over my vacation, and I'm having a really hard time getting back into the swing of things. Good luck with the emails!

It is now Wednesday. This is how behind I am.
