My Philosophy: Part Two

Treat everyone with respect, even if you have no respect for them.

I like this--I get really frustrated when people say, "I'll show him respect when he shows me respect," because someone has to take the first step!

Sarah - Nice point. Keeping respect in mind no matter how you're treated is a good way to go through life.

This doesn't mean you have to like everyone, it just means that you're better prepared to deal with life with a level-head. Respect, self-control, tact... these are things we need to embrace again.

lol. Yes. I have to admit, I'm a little guilty of not doing this. But it's usually due to a long history of disappointments ...

That's good to know, though I don't respect hardly anyone so this will be hard :)

So true. I'm an attorney and believe me I have to follow this one many times even if I don't want to.

That's a hard thing to do... but I try!

I use this line on my kids all the time. Hopefully it will eventually stick.

Great philosophy, Matt. :D

Treating someone with respect even if you have no respect for them doesn't mean you're a punk, it just means you have more class..well...at least that's what I tell myself when I want to *expletive* at them.

This is one I try to follow as well though it can be difficult at times.

Have a good one, Matt!

I think this is an important one. The tricky part is when you get to someone who is cruel. But if you stay at the human level, I think all humans deserve respect. It does not mean that there are not different boundaries to hold with different people. That creepy guy from "Silence of the Lambs" obviously needs more boundaries around him that my grandmother, but respect is fundamental.

Oh yes. This is a difficult one, but necessary, really.

Oh boy, that's a tough one. I have to work on that :-)

It is indeed a tough one. But I was the son of a diplomat, and learned it at my father's knee.

Matt, you are one away from 700 followers! 'Nother excuse for a party, I'd say!!!

Does this mean I have to get rid of the voodoo dolls?

I like what you are doing this week, Matt.

You've proven that, indeed, less is more.

Have a good one.

But what if they have different political values than I do? My party says to hate and revile those who don't drink the same kool-aid as I do...

It goes almost without saying that I have the utmost respect for you, Matthew!

Just like do unto others.

Yeah--it helps me to remember even really horrible or difficult people are acting out of SOMEWHERE--something learned, or some damage done. It's easier to be respectful for me if I tap that compassion.

Stellar words to live by. And I do everything in my power to do so. Kindness begets kindness that's for sure.

Unless you mess with my kids or my mom. Look out then.

I can respect that.
