A to Z Challenge 2013: E - Eurythmics


Eurythmics

eu·ryth·mics [yəˈriTHmiks] n. - the art of interpreting musical compositions by rhythmical, free-style bodily movement.

Synonyms: eurhythmics, eurhythmy, eurythmy

Etymology: also eurhythmic, "harmonious," 1831, from Greek eurythmia "rhythmical order," from eurythmos "rhythmical," from eu "well" (see eu-) + rhythmos "rhythm" (see rhythm). Related: Eurythmics (1912); eurythmy.

Yes, it's also a band.

NOTE: I'm finally back at my desk at the office today. I really enjoyed my time with my family at Universal Studios (see Facebook for some photos), and especially at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but I really wouldn't recommend going out of town for the first few days when you're co-hosting something as huge as the 2013 April A to Z Challenge. It's been going very well so far, of course, but I've felt bad I haven't been able to visit all of you who've been visiting me (or meeting anyone who hasn't, for that matter). But I plan to remedy all of that, now that I'm back, so I'm looking forward to reading all your posts!

    I remember the Eurythmics - Annie Lennox has such a fabulous voice.

    Potterland was awesome. I have to admit stepping through those gates was like really being there.

    I actually studied eurythmy when I was in teacher training for Waldorf/Steiner schools. I sometimes base magic on it, as well. Rudolf Steiner was a pretty amazing dude. Glad you survived the vacation.

    I remember being at secondary school (I'm British) when a friend of mine, Sharon, walked into an English lesson one day talking about how brilliant "the Eurythmics" were. I had no idea what she was talking about, so looked it up in the dictionary. Doh! The meaning has stayed with me ever since so it's nice to see it written down again.

    Eurythmics - great word. We are heading to Harry Potter Land with the kids for Spring Break. Can't wait....but trying to figure out when I'm going to post. lol. I love your word choices.

    A great idea to do a blog posting on words. Some people set themselves a daily challenge of learning a new word everyday and there are bound to be some here that will be new to all.

    Interesting! Was a huge fan of the eponymous band & always thought the "Eur" part of that was because they came from Europe. Thanks for your reminder email about the A to Z challenge today. Happy writing!

    Nice to have you back from vacation, Matthew.

    He heard the beat played by the band in the park and could not help the eu·ryth·mics that followed. Actually no one could help but dance and the park was soon filled with people moving along to the music as the band played and the sun beat down on us all.
