Left what I am afraid is an overly long post there. It sounds like you had to develop some pretty good coping skills as a kid or that you got into tons of trouble :).
I don't read much YA & no MG, so I have suggestions. But perhaps you can look at your own tragic loss in a different way. It has enabled you to love, cherish, & raise your children in a much more compassionate way, something you likely couldn't do exactly the same had you not experienced that loss. It has made you more in touch with your children & their emotions & needs. It's a steep price you've paid, but your children will no doubt benefit from that.
