- A good writer possesses not only his own spirit but also the spirit of his friends. ~Friedrich Nietzsche
For Justine:
- Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness. ~James Thurber
On characters:
- Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to a better understanding of ourselves. ~Carl Jung

ReplyDeleteSo much truth here. I remember when I was sixteen and realized the very things the made me nuts when done by my 8-year-old sister were perfectly fine when I did them. =D
Love the quotes, especially the last one. I'll remember that one when I'm being irritated. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThat last one is so true!

I do love that Jung quote. This is a really great idea, Matt.
ReplyDelete#5 is annoyingly true.
ReplyDeleteThat last one irritates me.
ReplyDeleteAwareness is the single greatest deficit I have in my personality. I try to be aware of things, but I'm so scatterbrained that it's next to impossible for me most days.
ReplyDeleteDarn!! So many people irritate me - but I always blame the full moon or the lunar tides..!! Take care

Thanks for these~ I've heard that last one before. It's always stuck out as something to keep in mind when little things annoy me~ I try to think about whether or not I do those things too (or used to). How you are able to deal with irritation says a lot about your growth and character.

ReplyDeleteNietzsche is a god. I swoon. And what he says is true: I am so grateful for my writer friends and their spirits. Thanks, Matt!
ReplyDelete(The real me commenting this time, not my hijacking teenage "Happy Mii" son!)
That last quote is great, it reminds me of a couple other quotes I've heard. I don't remember them exactly, but they basically said that we are known by A) what we hate and B) what hurts us. It always makes me think. :)
ReplyDeleteOooh the second one is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe world would be so much better if started looking at life in that way.
"Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness."
ReplyDeleteAnd always make sure to look sideways, as well, so as to avoid oncoming vehicles.
i love the quotes, but i must admit that i am here for an entirely different reason....YOU MET HENRY ROLLINS?!?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteThose are some good quotes. I especially like the Thurber one.
ReplyDeleteThe Carl Jung quote really rings true for me. If somebody irks me, I always go back to the question, "Why is what they are doing distracting me from my purpose?"
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for a theme week! I like the Cohen and Flaubert quotes quite a lot.
ReplyDeleteI love quotes about writers and by writers, and the first quote is a great one. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteThese were fantastic. I especially loved the first one. :)
ReplyDeleteTHe last quote works for all of us but I like how you applied it to our characters.
