Sarah - Nice point. Keeping respect in mind no matter how you're treated is a good way to go through life.
This doesn't mean you have to like everyone, it just means that you're better prepared to deal with life with a level-head. Respect, self-control, tact... these are things we need to embrace again.
Treating someone with respect even if you have no respect for them doesn't mean you're a punk, it just means you have more class..well...at least that's what I tell myself when I want to *expletive* at them.
I think this is an important one. The tricky part is when you get to someone who is cruel. But if you stay at the human level, I think all humans deserve respect. It does not mean that there are not different boundaries to hold with different people. That creepy guy from "Silence of the Lambs" obviously needs more boundaries around him that my grandmother, but respect is fundamental.
Yeah--it helps me to remember even really horrible or difficult people are acting out of SOMEWHERE--something learned, or some damage done. It's easier to be respectful for me if I tap that compassion.
I like this--I get really frustrated when people say, "I'll show him respect when he shows me respect," because someone has to take the first step!

lol. Yes. I have to admit, I'm a little guilty of not doing this. But it's usually due to a long history of disappointments ...
